The Department of Projects and Practicals
HOD: WINNIEVAH GESARE
Where Theory Ends and the Industry Begins. At Nayolites Film Academy, the classroom is only the beginning. The Department of Projects and Practicals is the heartbeat of the institution—a dedicated, high-octane environment where raw concepts are forged into broadcast-ready realities. Housed at the Bamuda Place production headquarters, this department operates exactly like a professional production studio. Here, students do not just study media; they create it. The mandate is absolute: every graduate must leave the Academy with a tangible, international-standard portfolio that proves their capability to future employers, networks, and global audiences. The Engine Room of the Academy This department bridges the gap between academic learning and industry execution. It oversees, funds, and manages all student-led productions from pre-production through to final exhibition. 1. Capstone Film & Documentary Productions Students take total ownership of the filmmaking process. Under the guidance of professional mentors, crews are formed to write, cast, direct, and edit high-quality short films and documentaries. The department ensures these projects are executed using the Academy's 4K camera workflows and cinematic color grading, aiming for the same caliber of visual excellence seen in professional releases like the *Tabaka Stone* documentary. 2. Live Theatrical & Cultural Exhibitions For students in the Theatre and Film Arts programs, this department stages the live Capstone Showcases. It manages the logistics of live audience productions, ensuring the seamless integration of traditional African song, youth dance choreography, and modern stage acting. Students are challenged to manage live acoustics, theatrical lighting, and stage blocking in real-time. 3. The Professional Industry Pipeline The department does not operate in a vacuum. It serves as a direct bridge to the working world. Nayohood Films: Top-tier student projects and standout crew members are actively scouted for professional integration into Nayohood Films' commercial shoots. Nayolites TV & Radio: Exceptional student content—ranging from youth advocacy programs to short films—bypasses the festival circuit and goes straight to broadcast on the Academy's affiliated networks, giving students immediate, real-world exposure. The Practical Standard The Department of Projects and Practicals enforces strict, industry-standard set etiquette. When students check out gear from the Equipment House—whether it is a 4K cinema camera, a complex three-point lighting kit, or professional location audio gear—they are expected to operate as a unified, disciplined crew. You don't just graduate with a certificate. You graduate with a credit. When the director calls "Action" in this department, you are no longer a student. You are a filmmaker.
